ADL Mode Operation
Configuration
The MDD uses a block of 8 CAN addresses starting at a base address of 0x0E8 or 0x1E8 (determined by the circuit board links - see Hardware Setup).
The ADL must be configured to use the MDD templates and the correct address. A correctly configured ADL will be auto-detected when the MDD is powered up. If another CAN device (such as an M800 ECU) is present on the same CAN bus, it must not be configured to send data on the MDD addresses.
For detailed information on ADL configuration, see Appendix C – ADL CAN Configuration.
There are six ADL display layouts available, with the current layout determined by the Display Mode byte in the MDD User Messages (see Appendix B – ADL User CAN Messages).
ADL Screen Layout
This layout allows the MDD to mimic all standard features present on the ADL display with the exception of the enunciator for the upper right numeric display.
The implementation of time formats on the MDD display is more flexible than the ADL display – time channels with resolution of 1, 0.1 and 0.01 seconds can be correctly displayed on the left and right numeric.
A sample layout is shown below:
The enunciators displayed for the left and right numeric are taken from the enunciators configured on the ADL however extra enunciator combinations are available on the MDD, as listed in Appendix A – Enunciator Strings for ADL displays.
MoTeC USA Steering Wheel Layout
This layout displays the following information:
Gain/Loss display functionality
The gain/loss graph uses the data from the ADL upper numeric, with one pixel per bit and zero in the centre.
E.g. If the upper numeric has a value of -20, gain/loss will show 20 pixels to the left of centre.
E.g. If the upper numeric has a value of 43, gain/loss will show 43 pixels to the right of centre.
Enunciator
The enunciators displayed for the left and right numerics are taken from the enunciators configured on the ADL. The enunciator combinations available on the MDD are listed in Appendix A – Enunciator Strings for ADL displays.
General Purpose large numeric display Layout
This layout displays the following information:
The enunciators displayed for the left and right numerics are taken from the enunciators configured on the ADL. The enunciator combinations available on the MDD are listed in Appendix A – Enunciator Strings for ADL displays.
Vertical Bar Graph Layout
This layout scales and displays 8 channels of data and two markers contained in MDD user messages from the ADL. The user messages are detailed in Appendix B – ADL User CAN Messages.
The eight bar graph values and the two marker positions are scaled according to the Maximum and Minimum values received from the ADL, within a range of -999 to 9999.
Marker numerics move with the marker dots, and shown if they are within range and do not touch the Maximum and Minimum numerics. Marker numerics may be hidden or displayed according to a flag in the user CAN messages. A marker can be removed from the screen by sending a marker value outside of the displayed range.
Horizontal Bar Graph Layout
This layout scales and displays 8 channels of data and two markers contained in MDD user messages from the ADL. The user messages are detailed in Appendix B – ADL User CAN Messages.
The eight bar graph values and the two marker positions are scaled according to the Maximum and Minimum values received from the ADL, within a range of -999 to 9999.
Marker numerics do not move with the marker dots, and may be hidden or displayed according to a flag in the user CAN messages. The marker dots can be removed from the screen by sending a marker value outside of the displayed range.
Original Porsche Lap Display Layout
The lap display layout (originally developed for Porsche) allows the MDD to generate a special display layout tailored to display lap centric information. The MDD display format is determined by the current display setup on the ADL, according to the following rules:
• If the ADL upper numeric is visible, display the value in the upper location.
• If the ADL upper numeric format is decimal, display the upper enunciator “Lap Number:”.
• If the ADL upper numeric format is not decimal, display the upper enunciator “Fastest Lap:”.
• If the ADL left numeric is visible display the value in the lower location.
• If the ADL left numeric format is a time format display the lower enunciator “Lap Time:”.
• If the ADL right numeric is visible and if the right numeric is in a decimal format then display the gain/loss bar graph.
• If the ADL right numeric is visible and is not in a decimal format, and the ADL left numeric is not visible, display the right numeric value in the lower location and display the lower enunciator “Predicted Lap:”
• If the ADL alpha display is visible, display the string in the bottom of the screen
The images included below illustrate some of the possible display layouts that can be displayed in this mode:
Normal Lap Display
• Lap number is controlled by the ADL upper numeric using a decimal format
• Lap time is controlled by the ADL left numeric using a time format
• The ADL alpha line is not blank
• The ADL right numeric is blank
Predicted Lap Override display with alpha line• Lap number is controlled by the ADL upper numeric using a decimal format
• Lap time is controlled by the ADL left numeric using a time format (normally blank, display on update)
• Predicted Lap is controlled by the ADL right numeric using a time format
• The ADL alpha line is not blank
Lap gain/loss graphic• Fastest Lap is controlled by the ADL upper numeric using a time format
• Lap time is controlled by the ADL left numeric using a time format
• Gain-Loss graph is controlled by the ADL right numeric using a decimal format
• The ADL alpha line blank
Other ADL Functionality
Inputs
The inputs on header J04 can be read by the ADL using the CAN messages described in Appendix B – ADL User CAN Messages.
Outputs
The five shift light outputs on header J03 (Four up shift lights and one down shift light) are controlled by the shift light system in the ADL. The remaining seven outputs on J03 are available for warning lights and are controlled using the MDD user CAN messages detailed in Appendix B – ADL User CAN Messages. Each warning light may be set to on, off or flashing at a rate of 1Hz.
The intensity of all 12 outputs are also individually controllable by the ADL using the MDD user CAN messages detailed in Appendix B – ADL User CAN Messages.
Display Contrast
The display contrast can be controlled by a user message from the ADL (see Appendix B – ADL User CAN Messages), or by the on board contrast pot. It is not intended that the user adjust the contrast pot.
Backlight Brightness
The backlight brightness can be controlled by a user message from the ADL (see Appendix B – ADL User CAN Messages).
Shift Light Disable
The shift light functionality can be disabled by a user message from the ADL (see Appendix B – ADL User CAN Messages). This feature can be used to allow bi-colour LEDs to double up as both shift lights and warning lights.
