Users who have experience with M4/M48 software on Windows Vista or Windows 7 will be aware that the DOS full screen mode and DOS graphics screens do not function correctly on these operating systems. This issue arises because the display drivers for Vista and Win7 no longer support DOS full screen mode or DOS graphics. Occasionally, a compatible driver may be found, or sometimes an XP driver can be used successfully with Vista or Win7, but these instances are quite rare.
One alternative is to use the generic Windows driver known as the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. This driver does support DOS full screen mode and DOS graphics. In my own experience, it works perfectly on a Dell XPS laptop running Windows 7 32-bit. However, I cannot guarantee that this solution will work on all laptop models, as hardware and driver compatibility can vary significantly.
It is important to note that the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter driver is very basic and somewhat slow compared to modern drivers. It lacks advanced features such as transparency effects and does not support multiple monitors. Because of these limitations, it is not a preferred driver for everyday use. However, switching to this driver temporarily for tasks such as tuning with the M4/M48 software is possible and can be done without causing major issues. Keep in mind that switching drivers requires a system reboot and will change your screen resolution, which may cause your desktop icons to shift around. Therefore, it is advisable not to switch frequently but rather to use this driver only when necessary and then switch back to your normal driver afterwards.
If you decide to switch to the generic Standard VGA Graphics Adapter driver, please follow these steps carefully:
First, open the Windows Control Panel and navigate to the Device Manager.
Next, expand the Display Adapters section and right-click on your current display driver.
Then, select 'Update Driver Software' from the context menu. Choose 'Browse my computer for driver software', followed by 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'.
A window will appear showing a list of available drivers. Here, you should see your current driver as well as the ‘Standard VGA Graphics Adapter’. Select the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter option and click Next to proceed.
The driver installation process will begin, during which your screen resolution will change. Once the installation is complete, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please save any work and restart as instructed.
After your system has rebooted, launch the M4/M48 software. To switch to full screen mode, press Alt+Enter, or alternatively, you can adjust the program properties to start in full screen mode by default.
Please be aware that using this driver may cause instability. The program or even your computer could crash, especially when switching between different programs. There are no guarantees that this workaround will function perfectly, so please proceed with caution and use this method at your own risk.
If you wish to revert to your original display driver, simply repeat the steps above, but in step 4, select your original driver from the list instead of the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. This will restore your previous driver settings and screen resolution.
