To communicate with an M4, M4-8 or M8 over Serial communications, the Com port needs to be configured in Windows.
This is done through the Windows Device Manager.
- To open the Device manager, press the Windows key and the R key at the same time, and then type devmgt into the popup window, press the enter key to open the program.
- When the Device Manager window opens, expand the Ports (COM & LPT) section to show the available ports.
- Right Click on the required Com port, this brings up the context menu, select Properties from the menu.
- In the properties window of the selected Com port, click on the Port Settings tab to configure the settings, the base settings to use are as shown. In most circumstances, when connecting to the device, the port will auto negotiate the speed, so setting it to 57600 give the devices room to move the speeds around.
- To change the Port Number being used (ideally it should be Com1 or Com 2), click on the Advanced button to bring up the Advanced settings. Click on the drop down for the Com ports and select the highest available number. Changing this will likely require the laptop to restart.
